  • Volunteers in Medicine
We are looking for a diabetes specialist to volunteer time in our organization. One of our nurses has been a diabetes specialist for many years and has seen patients one afternoon a week, but is now having to relinquish her duties because of ill health.

Volunteers in Medicine is an 11-year-old charitable organization that offers primary medical care to adult residents of St. Charles and Lincoln Counties who have no medical insurance of any kind—no Medicare and no Medicaid—and whose incomes are below 200% of the federal poverty guideline (about $19,000/year for a family of four). We see patients on Mondays (9:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.) and Wednesdays (two sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon) at our location at 2140 North 4th Street in St. Charles. Our clinic is staffed by 9 physicians, all but one of whom are retired, and about 25 retired RNs.
We provide patients with drugs and testing equipment as needed, and our patients are never charged anything. We do not discriminate, and we understand that how we deal with people is as important as the medical services we provide. I think we have a terrific, dedicated group of volunteers, a great group of people who are a pleasure to work with.
